Orcas Island

If you are familiar with the genesis of the Madrona brand then you know the idea was born in the San Juan Islands.  Our first choice when launching the business was to site the distillery on Orcas Island.  We quickly found that commercial space appropriate for distilling was not readily available and pivoted to our Redmond location.  East Redmond has been an excellent location for production and distribution, but lacks the reliable stream of adventurers drawn to the San Juans.  

A few months ago a building became available in Eastsound on Orcas.  Not just a warehouse box or barn, this location was originally imagined as a distillery site but was instead leased as office space.  Many structural and decorative elements feature custom hand-crafted steel fabricated on the island.  In some areas it feels like you’re walking under a 19th century bridge!  The upstairs tasting room features a balcony with views across the airport runway to Sucia Island and beyond.  

Orcas Island and the other islands served by passenger ferry are now popular destinations for visitors year-round.  The full-time resident population is also growing.  Residents and visitors alike tend to seek experiences, in and out of doors.  Restaurants, wineries, breweries, and cocktail lounges are packed from mid spring through September, but steady business continues through the holidays.  We are excited to be a part of this growing “adventure economy”!

When will this happen?  We will begin moving non-production items in February and will close the Tasting room in early March.  Everything needs to be out of Redmond by March 31st.  The optimist in me says the new tasting room will open by the end of April.…the realist says June.  Keep your fingers crossed for the earlier of those estimates!
